The Cross River State Government Under the Visionary leadership of the peoples first Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Otu, has through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts And Culture revamped the Ekumini Waterfalls in Ugep.
The waterfalls which is one of Yakurr’s most cherished natural attractions have been upgraded to global standards, offering tourist, visitors and culture enthusiasts a more refreshing and memorable experience, as this year’s festival drew a surge in tourists, translating into greater business for hotels, restaurants, artisans, and transport operators across Yakurr and beyond as well as giving the world famous Leboku International New Yam Festival 2025 a remarkable boost in both nature, culture and tourism.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Bishop Mrs. Eme Affiah, described the project as a milestone for the cultural tourism sector of the State, “The Ekumini Waterfalls is not just a natural attraction; it is a symbol of Yakurr’s heritage, Preparing it for Leboku 2025 gives our people and the world an opportunity to experience Cross River in its fullness of nature and beauty,” she added.
According to her, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and culture saddled with the responsibility of supervising Tourism, Arts, cultural and tour sites is set to ensure all tour sites under its jurisdiction are visitor ready especially to add grandeur to events like Leboku.
Similarly, the Director of Tourism In the Ministry, Mr. Dan Akeke, also stressed the economic benefits of Leboku and its attractions positing that tourism is about people, culture and prosperity, and Leboku clearly reflects the cultural heritage and tourism assets of the State which is the Ministry's commitment to promote ideas and activities that unite nature and culture.
The Ugep Community leaders expressed delight and Commended the State Government who through the Ministry ensured Ekumini was ready to welcome guests in grand style. “Leboku is our pride. With the waterfalls now shining brighter, this festival has not only celebrated our harvest but also brought development to our land.” they added.
During the event the Obolopon and Paramount Ruler of the Ugep Community Obol Ofem Obona Eteng the 16th asserted that the purposeful leadership of Senator Prince Bassey Otu has squarely addressed the infrastructure of the state as well as agricultural needs.
He however stated that the carefully thought out theme of fostering community corporations for sustainable food and security for the 2025 Leboku is not only apt but relevant to the state's effort to create an enviable ambience in the festival.
Mr Yibala Iyang, the Executive Chairman Yakurr Local Government Council described the festival as a watershed in the lives of the Ugep people stating that the festival has been sustained through the residence of the Yakurr peoples culture and heritage worthy of emulation by other communities in the state
